The Democratic Republic of Congo is not the easiest country in the world. Since 1996 we have been subjected to two major wars and Uvira, our town, was right in the middle of the mess. The destructive consequences of these wars can still be felt everywhere, and for most people around here life is difficult: poverty, malnutrition, high child mortality, low level of education, high illiteracy rate, unstable areas with military unrest, systematic violence against women, above average number of orphans and widows, tribal rivaleries, bad or non existing infrastructure even in our city, wide spred corruption and a weak and not very democratic government are some of the parameters of our life here. Yes, it's not funny, we know, but it is our reality, at least a good part of it, and it is the reason, why a couple of people decided to create PPU.
